主讲人简介:

Yuanzhu Chen is a professor in the Department of Computer Science at Memorial Univer·sity of Newfoundland in St. John’s, Newfoundland. He received his Ph.D. from Simon Fraser University in 2004 and B.Sc. from Peking University in 1999. Between 2004 and 2005, he was a post-doctoral researcher at Simon Fraser University. His research interests include graph theory, information retrieval, and wireless sensor networking.

Dr Chen has published over 70 research articles in peer-reviewed journals and conferences in these areas. He has supervised and co-supervised 2 postdoc fellows and over 50 graduate students with funding from national agencies and various university programs and awards. Dr Chen is a recipient of the President's Award for Distinguished Teaching (2018), named as one of the top teachers of Memorial University. He is a member of the IEEE and ACM.

Yuanzhu Chen(陈远筑)是纽芬兰圣约翰纪念大学计算机科学系教授。2004年获西蒙弗雷泽大学博士学位,1999年获北京大学理学学士学位。2004年至2005年间,他是西蒙·弗雷泽大学的博士后研究员。他的研究兴趣包括图论、信息检索和无线传感器网络。

陈教授在这些领域的同行评议期刊和会议上发表了70多篇研究文章。他曾在国家机构和各种大学项目及奖项的资助下,对2名博士后研究员和50多名研究生进行监督和共同监督。陈博士是校长杰出教学奖(2018)获得者,被评为纪念大学的顶尖教师之一。他是IEEE和ACM的成员。

主要内容:

What are the commonalities between transfer of data packets on the Internet, ordering web pages by a search engine, formation of communities and opinions in a social network, spread of diseases, chemical reactions of molecules in a cell, flow of cash in a financial market, and collaboration among movie actors? If modeled with networks, what are the physical laws governing the structures and evolution of these networks of varying natures? This talk provides a narrative of the emergence of the science of networks, and how such a transition from reductionism to holism of scientific research through interconnectedness affects everyone of us.

在互联网上传输数据包、通过搜索引擎订购网页、在社交网络中形成社区和意见、疾病传播、细胞内分子的化学反应、金融市场的现金流以及电影演员之间的合作之间有什么共同点?如果用网络来建模,那么控制这些不同性质网络的结构和演化的物理定律是什么?本次演讲叙述了网络科学的出现,以及这种从还原论到科学研究整体论的相互联系的转变是如何影响到我们每个人的。
